Expert urges action against HIV/AIDS

South Africa has passed the worst of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, but it still needs to act against the disease, Jerry Coovadia, a professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has said.

Addressing delegates at the second international Public Health Conference in Durban, Coovadia said HIV/AIDS, unemployment, poverty and violence were an "unfinished agenda" after 10 years of democracy in South Africa.

"We need to reinvent government to respond to public needs and the public health agenda. We know we have the knowledge, the resources and funding. All we have to do is act now," the South African Press Association quoted Coovadia as saying.
