AIDS awareness programme targets fishing camps

Zimbabwe's National AIDS Council (NAC) has identified fishing camps across the country as potentially high HIV transmission areas. The remote settlements where small groups of fishermen work away from home for a week at a time are now the target of an AIDS awareness and prevention programme by the NAC. A visit to the Mbila fishing camp, some 450 km east of Zimbabwe's second city of Bulawayo, found that fishermen were unconvinced that condom-use could prevent the spread of HIV. Shadreck Ndhlovu, an AIDS coordinator in Matabeleland North province, told the UN news service, PlusNews, that the questions raised highlighted the prevailing level of ignorance about HIV/AIDS in the camps.
