Joint initiative tackles AIDS in 14 country's

    JOHANNESBURG

    UNAIDS and the OPEC Fund for International Development have launched a two-year initiative to boost programmes aimed at countering the spread of HIV/AIDS in 14 countries around the world.

    The initiative aims to mobilise greater political commitment, with the focus on a number of aspects, including the position of women, partnerships between the public and private sectors, and factors that increased the risk of HIV, such as migration and regional conflicts.

    UNAIDS executive director Peter Piot in a statement said his agency welcomed the collaboration with the OPEC Fund.

    "AIDS is one of the greatest challenges of our era ... the OPEC Fund will help us to provide urgently needed assistance to scale up the AIDS response in the fourteen targeted countries," Piot said.
