Special envoy urges more money for HIV/AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    A senior UN official has appealed to the world's 30 richest countries for US $200 million, for the World Health Organisation's (WHO) "3 by 5" HIV/AIDS initiative.

    During a recent press briefing in New York, the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, said the initiative to provide drugs for 3 million HIV-positive people by 2005 had run into a roadblock for lack of funding.

    Lewis said: "How is it that the resources for WHO can't be mobilised? Thus far, only the United Kingdom, Spain and Sweden have indicated a willingness to consider some relatively modest sums."

    The WHO 3 by 5 initiative, Lewis said, was the "best chance we've had in more than 20 years to turn the [HIV/AIDS] pandemic around".
