MSF concerned by poor AIDS contribution

    JOHANNESBURG

    The international medical NGO, Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF), has expressed concern over Australia's meagre contribution of US $6.6 million per year over three years to the Global AIDS Fund.

    Kathryn Dinh, the director of MSF's essential medicines campaign, said Australia's poor commitment showed that it was shirking its responsibility to help counter the growing health crisis.

    Dinh was quoted by the news agency, Inter Press Service (IPS), as saying: "The Netherlands, which has a similar sized economy to Australia, has pledged more than eight times the amount committed by the Australian government for 2004."

    The Fund needs to raise an estimated $1.6 billion to finance its 2004 programmes.
