Anti-AIDS campaigns for internally displaced launched

    JOHANNESBURG
    The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has launched public awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS and hygiene in camps for internally displaced people (IDPs). The URCS deputy secretary-general, Alice Uwase Anakur, said the campaigns would target IDPs in Uganda's Kitgum and Pader districts. Apart from its usual relief distribution, the URCS had also realised the need to protect IDPs from HIV/AIDS and other diseases. A local newspaper, New Vision, quoted Uwase as saying: "The way people are crowded [in the camps] is a fertile ground for HIV transmission. We need to find innovative ways of integrating HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns into relief distribution."
