Positive turn-out for voluntary HIV testing

    JOHANNESBURG

    Increased HIV/AIDS awareness in Ethiopia has led to a rising number of people in the capital, Addis Ababa, opting for voluntary HIV tests, health authorities have confirmed.

    According to the city's HIV/AIDS Control Office, an average of 10 people a day were currently visiting each of the city's 21 health facilities for voluntary testing.

    Amenu Wosenof, a health official with the control office, said 19,428 people out of just over 100,000 who reported for testing at health centres between January and September 2003 were found to be HIV-positive.

    Research shows that 6.6 percent of all adults aged between 15 and 49 are already living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.
