HIV/AIDS prevalence among teachers probed

    JOHANNESBURG

    A study to determine the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among teachers is being conducted in South Africa, the local Sunday Times online reported on Tuesday.

    Education Minister Kader Asmal said the country's Human Sciences Research Council, with the assistance of teachers from a number of unions, were conducting the study for his department.

    "The purpose of this exercise is to determine in a scientific manner the exact prevalence of HIV/AIDS among teachers," Asmal said.

    He said the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) was not convinced by some of the "alarmist" reports being produced by various research agencies and NGOs.

    "This is only part of a bigger study on teacher supply and demand," Asmal added.
