Rebels in Cote d'Ivoire have signed a ceasefire agreement, Senegal's Foreign Minister Chiekh Tidiane Gadio said on radio on Thursday. The agreement, signed in the central town of Bouake, was scheduled to enter into effect at midnight on Thursday.
Gadio had travelled to rebel-held Bouake with the Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, earlier on Thursday to get the insurgents to agree to the ceasefire.
The rebels have been occupying parts of central and northern Cote d'Ivoire since 19 September, when they attempted to overthrow the government of President Laurent Gbagbo.
Gadio said the government had promised to sign the deal later on Thursday.
