More youth AIDS education programmes needed

The AIDS Support Organisation in Uganda (TASO) on Tuesday said the lack of youth education programmes had left adolescents at greater risk of infection. "While a number of programmes exist for people living with HIV/AIDS, none specifically address the education of youngsters," TASO training manager, Juliana Nyombi, told the UN news service PlusNews. Nyombi said adolescents were still engaging in unsafe sexual practices through fear of being labelled HIV-positive. "They will not use the condoms that are made available to them. The common belief is that if you use a condom you are HIV-positive," Nyombi added. Nyombi urged communities to help eradicate the stigma and other myths surrounding HIV/AIDS.
