Churches pull their weight in AIDS battle

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) on Monday said faith-based NGOs do more for HIV/AIDS than just promote abstinence.

    CHAZ said apart from the many home-based care initiatives provided by the NGOs, the importance of condom use was also emphasised through national church education programmes.

    "Many people are under the misconception that all faith-based organisations are against the use of condoms. This could not be further from the truth," CHAZ health programme director, Karen Sichinga, told the UN news service PlusNews.

    Sichinga said the religious institutions and faith-based organisations provided an estimated 30 to 40 percent of health care in Zambia.

    Meanwhile, the Global AIDS Fund has signed HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis grant agreements with Zambia worth US $42.6 million over two years.
