More AIDS action for women - activists

Zimbabwe's Women and AIDS Support Network (WASN) on Monday called on the government to implement a more progressive policy to protect women against HIV/AIDS. "While there have been promises on paper, there has been no real government action to protect the many economically disempowered women against AIDS," WASN information officer, Matilda Moyo, told the UN news service PlusNews. Moyo said the group had "lobbied endlessly" for the government to subsidise female condoms. "As caregivers, women must be given priority when it comes to HIV/AIDS treatment and protection. A five-year treatment plan launched in 2001 has almost drawn to a close and only a small number of women are able to access the drugs," Moyo added.
