No swindling of funds - activists

    JOHANNESBURG

    Kenya's AIDS NGO Consortium (KANCO) on Thursday said NGO efforts in tackling HIV/AIDS outnumbered those of the government.

    KANCO was responding to comments on Monday by Health Minister Charity Ngilu who called Kenyan NGOs "merchants of death". She accused them of "lining their coffers" with money that should be used for people living with HIV/AIDS.

    KANCO said Ngilu's remarks had no basis in fact and were an attempt to draw public attention away from government inaction.

    "NGOs have done more for Kenyans living with HIV/AIDS than the government ever could. Ngilu is trying to draw attention away from her costly restructuring of the National AIDS Control Council (NACC)," KANCO programme policy manager, Esther Gatua, told the UN news service PlusNews.

    NACC currently sits in the office of the president and coordinates all government and NGO HIV/AIDS interventions.
