AIDS initiative to combat drug resistance

    JOHANNESBURG

    A UK-based AIDS lobby group on Tuesday said its latest global initiative will help combat HIV drug resistance in people living with HIV/AIDS.

    The HIV Resistance Response Database Initiative (RDI) said the radical new approach could enhance the ability of physicians to choose the most cost-effective drugs when their patients need to upgrade.

    "It becomes increasingly expensive to upgrade treatment because of the virus' ability to mutate and build new defences against available therapy," RDI chief executive, Andrew Revelle, told the UN news service PlusNews.

    Revelle said RDI data can assist in shaping a more cost-effective treatment strategy in developing countries, where very small numbers of people can afford HIV/AIDS drugs.

    "The RDI data collected from thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world will be made freely accessible to physicians," Revelle added.
