Delayed funds hamper treatment programmes

Malawi's National AIDS Commission on Monday said delays in the release of Global AIDS Fund money was retarding efforts against HIV/AIDS. The Global Fund announced a US $119 million grant to Malawi in a press release earlier this year. "We should have received the money sometime this week, but have been informed by the Fund that not all specimen signatures were collected," commission director of finance, Amy Muyco, told the UN news service PlusNews. Muyco said the delay affects possible treatment plans as a large sum of the grant has been allocated to the care and support of people living with HIV/AIDS. "Existing funds focus mainly on prevention programmes. We are relying on the Global Fund grant to make HIV/AIDS drugs accessible within the public sector," Muyco added.
