A four-day media workshop to encourage effective HIV/AIDS reporting was launched on Tuesday in Zimbabwe, the local newspaper the Zimbabwe Standard reported.
However, an AIDS NGO said while it welcomed the workshop, more had to be done to make the rest of the world aware of the country's pandemic.
Zimbabwe's National Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (ZNNP+) said journalists were still afraid of "truthful AIDS reporting".
"Our local media is an important partner in this exercise and should make this a personal mission to let the world know what is happening here," ZNNP+ chairwoman, Tendai Chimusoro, told the UN news service PlusNews.
Chimusoro also stressed the importance of the media and NGOs working more closely to destigmatise HIV/AIDS.
