More resources for AIDS battle urges UN chief

    JOHANNESBURG

    UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, on Thursday met with the Global AIDS Fund chair to discuss ways of stimulating support to combat HIV/AIDS.

    The meeting covered the recent US $15 billion HIV/AIDS pledge announced by US President George W. Bush and the impact of HIV/AIDS on the African food crisis.

    Addressing ministers of group of 8 most industrialised countries (G-8) last month, Annan urged the world's richest countries to provide resources in the battle against hunger and HIV/AIDS in Africa.

    "We are trying to get NGOs, private companies as well as other countries to realise the importance of this tremendous fight," Fund chairman, Tommy Thompson, said in a statement.
