UN report puts health minister in the clear

South Africa's Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on Sunday said she had been "vindicated" by a manual prepared by two UN agencies.

Released last week in Geneva by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the manual suggests that HIV/AIDS can be tackled with a balanced diet.

"The WHO report vindicates our position that you can't overlook nutrition and just focus on drugs. If you do not address the state of hunger, you have not begun dealing with the problem," Tshabalala-Msimang told the local Sunday Times newspaper.
