New equipment for HIV/AIDS prevention

    JOHANNESBURG

    An HIV/AIDS centre in the Central African Republic (CAR) has received US $34,000 worth of computer and audiovisual equipment from UNAIDS.

    The Bangui-based national HIV/AIDS documentation, education and communication centre said researchers, students and AIDS NGOs would benefit from the new equipment and Internet access.

    "We are now able to increase the public's levels of HIV/AIDS awareness," the centre's director, Enock Senzongo, told the UN news service PlusNews on Wednesday.

    Institut Pasteur and CAR's National Committee Against AIDS in December 2002 said an HIV prevalence rate of 14.8 percent made the country the 10th most affected nation in the world.
