AIDS kills African skills and knowledge - UN

    JOHANNESBURG

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday urged the world's richest countries to provide resources in the battle against hunger and HIV/AIDS in Africa.

    "We cannot find viable solutions to the challenge of food security unless we address the challenges of HIV/AIDS and governance at the same time," Annan said.

    Annan was addressing ministers from the G-8 group of most industrialised countries at the UN headquarters in New York.

    "Because of HIV/AIDS, skills and knowledge are dying out rather than being passed from one generation to the next," he said.

    Stressing the need to reverse the "alarming decline" in official aid for African agriculture, Annan said: "You, the richest governments in the world, are among those best placed to provide those resources."
