The key to HIV/AIDS awareness

A leading South African sex education campaign on Tuesday lauded the use of radio soap operas in raising HIV/AIDS awareness across Africa.

Soul City senior marketing manager, John Molefe, said radio drama had become an effective form of communication in rural and urban Africa.

"Radio can reach where other information and communication technologies cannot. It is definitely a key instrument in HIV/AIDS prevention," Molefe told the UN news service PlusNews.

Molefe said audience identification with characters often leads to discussions about issues raised and eventually to individual or even collective action.

"Culturally, Africans have always learned through drama and storytelling," Molefe added.
