South Africa's Public Protector on Monday said a case between Mpumalanga Province health minister Sibongile Manana and local AIDS activists will be settled out of court.
Manana filed an application in the High Court on 28 January to have the Greater Nelspruit Rape Intervention Project (GRIP) removed from local hospitals for dispensing HIV/AIDS drugs to rape victims.
"I cannot find reason for incurring any further legal costs at taxpayer expense. It would be in everyone's best interests for this matter to be settled amicably out of court," Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana told the UN news service PlusNews.
However, GRIP said they had not received notice of an out of court settlement from Manana.
"Mushwana has put forward his suggestion, but Manana has not approached us for a settlement. As far as I know, the case is still on for 4 February 2003," GRIP's chief executive, Barbara Kenyon, said.
