    JOHANNESBURG

    A senior Namibian government official on Thursday urged authorities to act on the country's rising number of HIV/AIDS cases, local newspaper The Namibian reported.

    UNAIDS estimates HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in Namibia at 25.5 percent among adults aged 15-49 years.

    Addressing the National Assembly, Congress of Democrats member, Rosa Namises, called on government to immediately implement a countrywide mother-to-child prevention programme. She recommended that the government draw on similar programmes in Botswana and South Africa.

    At present antiretroviral drugs have been restricted to trial programmes in the northern towns of Windhoek and Oshakati.
