The Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute on Thursday announced the official launch of a wide-ranging study to determine the effectiveness of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment on the adult population in the southern African country.
The Gaborone-based institute said the "Tshepo study" would examine six global ARV combinations to assess which perform best in the local population.
Study coordinator Dr William Wester said in a statement the study opened late last year with the enrolment of the first participants at the Princess Marina Hospital’s Infectious Disease Care Clinic in Gaborone.
"Thirty of the people who had enrolled are doing very well. We hope to find out what treatment combinations work best for Botswana," Wester said.
