New HIV/AIDS money in the pipeline

    JOHANNESBURG

    Canada has announced an additional US $236.7 million spending on foreign aid for 2003, the AIDS Education Global Information System (AEGiS) reported on Monday.

    "Half of these new monies will be devoted to Africa to promote health and to fight HIV/AIDS," Canada's Finance Minister John Manley said.

    At a UN conference in Mexico early last year, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien made a commitment of an 8 percent increase per annum on foreign aid over eight-years.

    Addressing the country's House of Commons last Tuesday, Manley said the increase was now anchored in the government's financial planning.
