President to receive HIV/AIDS award

Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo will be honoured for his leadership on HIV/AIDS locally and internationally, the US Harvard AIDS Institute said on Thursday. Obasanjo will be awarded the 2002 AIDS Leadership Award for his commitment in the global struggle against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the institute said in a statement. "The depth of Obasanjo’s commitment has awakened others to the urgency of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. His leadership in addressing the epidemic is truly remarkable," the institute's chair, Prof. Max Essex said. The award ceremony on 20 February is part of a four day workshop in the capital, Abuja, to examine key HIV/AIDS issues affecting West Africa.
