More funds for the Global Fund - activists

    JOHANNESBURG

    An HIV/AIDS lobby group has cautiously welcomed the US government's commitment to increased spending on HIV/AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.

    This week US President George W. Bush pushed for Congress to up government spending on HIV/AIDS to US $15 billion.

    "While we welcome this commitment, the Bush administration has a record of not fulfilling its pledges to the UN Global Fund against HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria," the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) said in a statement on Wednesday.

    "We call for this commitment to be made to the Global Fund, which has the independence and integrity to ensure that the money is properly allocated and accounted for," the TAC added.
