Trade unions are resisting government plans to introduce a civil service AIDS levy, South African Press Agency (SAPA) reported on Tuesday.
Civil service unions are concerned about how the government intends to spend the R832 million (US $92.4 million) the levy could raise annually.
In particular, the unions object to the government’s plan to use the funds to provide civil servants with HIV/AIDS counselling.
Instead, the fund should pay for treating HIV-positive civil servants, the unions argue.
Talks between government and the unions are set to resume next week.
