SOUTH AFRICA: Government must prove its leadership abilities - COSATU

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) on Tuesday said the government must prove its leadership qualities by signing the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) agreement which grants treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS (PWAs).

    "COSATU demands that government and business sign and implement the NEDLAC agreement to make treatment available as soon as possible to people living with HIV/AIDS," COSATU acting spokesman Patrick Craven told the UN news service PLusNews.

    Craven said NEDLAC's labour and community sectors had already signed the agreement which was negotiated in November last year.

    "It is intolerable that lives could be lost needlessly by delays in implementing a prevention and treatment plan which offers hope for those living with the virus and could prevent its spread to thousands of others," COSATU said.

    COSATU said the government must act on the December conference where it resolved to make the fight against HIV/AIDS a top priority 2003.
