AIDS activists on Monday welcomed a government announcement that ministers would use their public meetings as an opportunity to disseminate HIV/AIDS information.
However, co-founder of the Lagos-based NGO ActionHealth, Dr. Uwem Esiat, told the UN news service Plusnews that the government had yet to develop a comprehensive HIV/AIDS education strategy which targets all indigenous language groups.
"It is imperative that the government encourage community action through multi-lingual awareness programmes because while HIV/AIDS is a problem for the entire country it has affected some indigenous groups more than others," Esiat said.
Under the arrangement, top government officials are to use the opportunity of their greater access to the public to disseminate information that is designed to educate the people on how to deal with the HI virus.
