The town on Lamu island off Kenya's coast would be added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites, local media reported on Tuesday, quoting the Minister for Heritage and Sports Francis Nyenze. "The result of Lamu being included in the World Heritage List is that the town is now on the threshold of increased tourism and investment," he said. Nyenze added that this showed UNESCO recognised the unique cultural heritage with which Lamu is associated.
The Minister was speaking as he opened the third Africa 2009 regional directors seminar in the coastal city of Mombasa on Monday. He said Lamu would be Kenya's third site to make it to the list of honour. The workshop brings together directors and heads of heritage institutions from 32 black African countries. Other Kenyan sites already on the list include Mt Kenya and Sibiloi, which are natural sites. The minister called on international
agencies that support conservation of cultural heritage to continue with
their work.
