Switzerland hands over Rwandan priest to international tribunal

    NAIROBI

    Switzerland has handed over a former Rwandan priest, Emmanuel Rukundo, to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha to face charges of genocide, Radio Rwanda reported on Friday. Rukundo, 42, is accused of having compiled lists of Tutsis to be killed while serving as an army chaplain.

    He was detained on 12 July at the request of the war crimes prosecutor, Carla del Ponte. His appeal against extradition was rejected early in September by the Swiss Supreme Court. Rwandan radio cited a statement by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice as saying that Rukundo was working as a priest in Geneva, where he was arrested.
