UN mission cut short by terror attacks in US

The United Nations system said on 14 September that the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Kenzo Oshima, had been forced to cut short his visit to Sudan as a result of the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The UN resident coordinator in Sudan, Roger Guarda, told a press conference last week that Oshima had been obliged to interrupt his visit after completing its first part, which included meetings with President Umar Hasan al-Bashir and other government officials in charge of humanitarian action. He added that the immediate relief needs of flood- and drought-affected people had been discussed at the meetings, and that Oshima was scheduled to return to Sudan "relatively soon" to continue his mission.
