Government to create tens of thousands of jobs

    ABIDJAN

    A total of 71,000 jobs are to be created in the next four years following the introduction of two government initiatives, Ghanaian media reported President John Kufuor as saying in an address read out on Saturday on his behalf by Vice President Aliu Mahama Mahama.

    The projects - an Integrated Programme for Cassava Starch Production and an
    Export Action Programme for Export of Garments and Textiles - were announced
    at an export awards ceremony in Accra.

    The cassava starch programme is expected to provide about 25,000 jobs in farming communities for the production and export of starch. Reiterating the government’s commitment to creating a vibrant private sector, Kufuor said the export action programme was directed at the export of textiles to the US market. Loans are to be provided at concessionary rates to help promote and develop the export trade and enable Ghanaian industries to compete on the global market.

    An improved export sector, he added, would promote increased agriculture production, create jobs and eventually contribute to wealth creation.
