Senegal’s MFDC end congress ends in disarray

    ABIDJAN

    The pro-independence guerrilla group, le Mouvement des forces democratiques de Casamance (MFDC), ended its four-day congress without reaching a consensus on its strategy for peace talks with the Senegalese government, AFP reported. The meeting ended in “disarray” in the Gambian capital, Banjul, AFP reported. A closing ceremony was cancelled and no final communique was released.

    This week’s meeting, originally scheduled for January, had been put off several times due to conflict within the MFDC. The meeting was attended by all the factions, including that headed by Salif Sadio, a hardliner who prefers a military solution to the 19-year old war. Sadio was not at the meeting.
