France has given Niger eight billion francs CFA (US $10.7 million) in budgetary support, PANA reported on Saturday. Of this, 2.1 billion CFA (US 2.8 million) will go to road maintenance and 1.2 billion (US $1.6 million) to poverty alleviation. Cash-strapped Niger has been beset for years by an acute financial crunch that has prompted strikes by teachers and other public servants, owed over 12 months’ salaries.
