A nationwide strike by miners has been put on hold at gold mines, but will still go ahead at certain coal mines ‘Business Report’ said on Wednesday. The report quoted Frans Barker, chief negotiator of the Chamber of Mines, saying that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) had asked to meet the gold companies again on Friday, giving NUM time to present the final offers to its members.
The report said the gold companies had improved their offers to meet the demand for a US $242 minimum salary for the lowest paid worker, but that the increases would be implemented over two years. Other workers above the minimum wage level would gate a wage increase of between 7.5 percent and 8.6 percent for both years. Secretary general of NUM, Gwede Mantashe, was quoted saying that the union would present the offers to workers at various mines on Wednesday.
