The rebel Conseil national pour la defense de la democratie-Forces pour la defense de la democratie (CNDD-FDD) has condemned a ban by the Burundi authorities on some fishing activities in Lake Tanganyika. In a statement, received by IRIN on Monday, the group claimed the move - introduced last month - was aimed at “concentrating the lake products in the hands of a tiny minority”.
“As a pretext, Major Buyoya intends to prevent the coastal population from
feeding, from informing about the enemy, in short, from backing up the FDD,” the statement said. “However, Major Buyoya knows very well that he will never succeed in preventing
the so-called ‘rebels’ from moving about where they see fit in the
country because they are at one with the Burundian people.”
