The hardline pro-Tutsi PARENA party, led by former president Jean-Baptiste Bagaza, on Monday said it had been excluded from meetings in Pretoria with the mediator Nelson Mandela “because the mediation team knew the party would not agree with the main agenda”. “The mediation team acted this way because it was convinced that the chairman of the party was not going to accept the renewal of the partnership (between government and other political groups) in return for a few adjustments which the mediation team wishes to secure from the signatories of Arusha accord,” PARENA spokesman Zenon Nimubona said, according to the private Netpress news agency. Mandela is meeting the 19 signatories of the peace accord, ahead of announcing a “breakthrough” in the peace process.
