President Isayas Afewerki has dismissed the significance of internal criticism in the ruling People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), and said the priority was to reconstruct the country. Addressing the closing session of a meeting between PFDJ officials in Imbatikala, eastern Eritrea, he called recent internal criticisms “just a political hiccup”, official Eritrean radio said on 6 July. “Our responsibilities should not focus on daily events, but on the challenges facing our country’s historical background, and future trends.” He said the there was a major responsibility to “restore the sovereignty of our country”, and that the danger of war with Ethiopia “was not yet averted completely”.
