Regional heads of state, currently in Lusaka, Zambia, for an OAU meeting, held talks with the Burundi peace process mediator Nelson Mandela on Sunday night. According to Rwandan presidential spokesman Nicholas Shalita, the meeting was presided over by the chairman of the regional initiative for Burundi, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda. After the meeting, which lasted several hours, Mandela announced there had been a “breakthrough” in discussions, although he declined to reveal the details until he had briefed the 19 signatories to the Arusha peace accord.
