The Mozambican government has asked the World Bank to help finance a scheme aimed at helping white Zimbabwean commercial farmers relocate to Mozambique, reports said on Wednesday.
The governor of Mozambique’s Manica province, which borders Zimbabwe, Sores Nhaca, told Zimbabwe’s independent newspaper, the ‘Daily News’, he had had discussions with about 150 white commercial farmers from Zimbabwe on their plans to resettle and pursue their farming activities in Mozambique.
Nhaca said his government was sourcing an undisclosed sum from the World Bank to help resettle the Zimbabwean farmers. He said the relocation would create at least 1,300 jobs for Mozambicans White Zimbabwean farmers, who will lose an estimated five million hectares of land to President Robert Mugabe’s controversial fast-track resettlement exercise.
