Rebels hail UN visit

The rebel Conseil national pour la defense de la democratie-Forces pour la defense de la democratie (CNDD-FDD) has expressed satisfaction over last week’s meeting between its leader Jean-Bosco Ndayikengurukiye and members of the Security Council mission. In a statement received by IRIN on Monday, CNDD-FDD spokesman Jerome Ndiho said his movement was happy to learn that Gabonese President Omar Bongo would now be a co-facilitator of the Burundi peace process along with Nelson Mandela. The movement also expressed its willingness to negotiate with the Burundian army “with the ultimate aim of restoring peace and democracy to Burundi in keeping with the Libreville process”. Observers say the Libreville process which provides for direct talks between the government and CNDD-FDD is currently deadlocked.
