Increased cooperation with Japan

Nigeria and Japan have concluded a multisectoral agreement that will allow the West African nation to benefit from Japanese expertise in areas such as education, health, agriculture, water, energy, and information technology, ‘The Guardian’ reported on Thursday.

Details of the agreement, signed on Tuesday, are yet to be worked out, the Lagos daily reported.

Prior to its signing, the agriculture sector had already benefited from a grant of 350 million naira (US $3 million) for buying fertilisers and other farming-related material. Under the new partnership, teams of Japanese experts are expected in Nigeria soon to assess the rural water supply and study ways to fight infectious diseases, ‘The Guardian’ reported.

The agreement was signed during a three-day visit to Japan by President Olusegun Obasanjo. It is part of efforts by Japan to increase cooperation with Africa through Nigeria, which it sees as an influential leader and player in African development, the daily quoted Kimihiro Ishikane of the Africa Division of Japan’s Foreign Ministry as saying.
