Expert warns against 4th term for Nujoma

South Africa’s Centre for Defence and Security Management has advised Namibian politicians to avoid using unconstitutional tactics to remain in power, the weekend edition of ‘The Namibian’ said. Analyst and spokesman for the centre, Anthoni van Nieukerk was quoted as saying that recent attacks on foreigners, the media, gays and lesbians were signs that the “government is not comfortable with the democratic system they have created.”

“This is disturbing for political stability and reflects an attitude of political intolerance,” Nieukerk said. He said any attempt by Nujoma to run for a fourth term in office “might sink Namibia’s democracy into stagnation”.

Last week, the European Union said the recent “offensive statements” made against minorities damaged confidence in Namibia and undermined the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment, develop tourism industry and improve the living standard of the Namibian people.
