UNITA attacks military base near Namibian border

Suspected UNITA rebels attacked an Angolan military base near the Namibian border on Wednesday, killing one civilian and injuring two government soldiers, PANA reported.

Namibian military officials said that mortars and machine guns were used in the attack. The two injured soldiers recovering at Andara hospital near Rundu, the regional capital of Kavango, were quoted as saying that the base was attacked from the north-east. They told journalists that mortars rained down on the base for almost 20 minutes and that after a fierce exchange of fire, the bandits withdrew and went on to attack a nearby civilian camp. A Namibian woman visiting the camp from Divundu was injured and another, who was hit by shrapnel, was killed instantly, the report said.
