PARENA blasts Buyoya proposals

The pro-Tutsi PARENA party on Sunday criticised President Buyoya's peace proposals to mediator, Nelson Mandela, the private Burundi Netpress news agency said. It quoted the party's vice-president Cyrille Barancira as saying he did not understand how Mandela could give the go-ahead to Buyoya to "violate" the Arusha peace process.

He said PARENA could not join a government "led by the same people who, for the last eight years, have not been able to restore peace". "It would just be another government put up in a hurry by the same people who want to remain in power forever," Barancira added.
