First phase of water project completed

The first phase of a water project in the southeast Nigerian state of Cross River has been completed and is ready to supply water to local residents, ‘The Vanguard’ newspaper reported on Thursday.

The US $116-million water scheme, funded by the African Development Bank,
will service people living in the town of Calabar, project manager Ansa
Archibong said. Current water shortages in the city are due to broken and old pipes which need replacing, he said, adding that only about 30 percent of the 50,000-60,000 cubic metres of water supplied daily by the state water board reaches consumers.

The entire project is due to be completed early in 2002.
