Buyoya says he is no obstacle to transition

Meanwhile, Burundian President Pierre Buyoya on Tuesday said he was not an obstacle to the setting up of transitional institutions, the private Burundi news agency NetPress said. He noted that the country had been led by a president who “does not fear to leave power”. Buyoya reiterated that it was impossible, however, to set up the institutions before the signing of the ceasefire. He said it was evident that most of the signatories of the Arusha agreement wanted to be part of the government, adding that he was not opposed to that. He said it was “unacceptable” that some people should set up transitional institutions by excluding those who greatly contributed to the signing of the agreement. He believes the signatories should instead get in touch with the government so as to study how to form an all-inclusive government that would later replace the transitional government.
