New Moslem newspaper

A new Moslem newspaper, ‘Al Fatwa International’, has been launched in Bujumbura, the private Azania news agency reported on Tuesday. An editorial in the first edition asked why there was the need for a new publication when other papers had been closed down for various reasons after just a few months. “Our goal is to participate in the efforts to give correct information about Burundi, constantly torn by crises, while many other newspapers are more concerned with political events and reporters have turned to sensationalism, sometimes using libel and lies in order to please readers on the same [ideological or political] side as the journalist,” the editorial stated.

The quarterly newspaper said it sought to “rise above sectarian interests, so that peace will reign in the hearts of Burundians”. Azania named the newspaper’s managing editor as Mohamed Nibaruta, a well-known personality in Bujumbura’s Muslim community.
